Six things you'll be able to do on Thursday morning

This is a working session for engineers, not a product pitch. Everything below is covered with a GEOMET® 500 + PLUS M system as the worked example.

Read a torque-tension curve properly

Separate µtotal, µthread and µhead, and understand what the scatter band is telling you about the coating and the joint.

Set a COF window a supplier can hold

Where to place the window for your part, how wide it needs to be, and what a needlessly tight window costs you in price and rejection.

Recognise four failure signatures

Loosening in service, bolt yield, thread stripping and unexplained line rejections — and how to trace each one back to friction instead of guessing.

Know which parameters move COF

Topcoat film weight, cure profile, application method and coating uniformity — what genuinely shifts friction batch to batch, and what does not.

Run and document the right test

ISO 16047 setup, a sampling frequency that survives an audit, and the records to retain for traceability with your customer.

Three things about friction that surprise most specs

Almost none of your torque becomes clamp load

Around nine-tenths of the torque you apply is spent overcoming friction under the bolt head and in the threads. What is left holds the joint together.

A small drift in µ is a large drift in preload

Two bolts, same wrench, same torque setting: move µtot from 0.10 to 0.16 and clamp load can fall by roughly a third. Nothing on the shop floor looks any different.

Friction is not a property of the coating

Four things change µ without anyone touching the coating: the mating nut, the counter surface, the tightening speed, and how many times the joint has been tightened before.
